As spring is in full swing here in Northeast Florida, Hope at Hand steps through many new doors thanks to the generous support of our donors.
Our poetry therapy sessions at the Pretrial Detention Facility, sponsored by Firehouse Subs, began in February and were well received by the female teens. One commented, “Since I’ve been in these sessions, I feel a little bit more connected with myself, opening up, showing emotions, talking to others with new conversations and now new faces. Laughter is truly priceless. I’ve shared a few with some amazing people.”
We received requests from other incarcerated females for poetry groups and as funding opportunities arise we hope to be able to fulfill those requests. Check out their beautiful artwork below!
Our sessions at Cypress Village saw some amazing Soul Collage® artwork come out of the elderly patients dealing with dementia, pictured below.
And our work with teens in our community continues. The teens attending the McKenzie’s Academic Resource Center at Countryside Mobile Home Park enjoyed another successful class. We look forward to providing additional sessions for this amazing organization.
We are so excited to announce the opportunity to offer poetry classes at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind this fall! We are so grateful for the continued support of our donors and sponsors and look forward to bringing you more stories, more artwork, and more poetry from those we serve in our community.
Be sure to sign up to receive our newsletter and stay in the loop about the amazing difference your support is making in the lives of those we serve. If you’ve missed any past issues, you can catch up here!
Update your calendars! Our Soul Collage® class has been rescheduled for April 13th, 2013 from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Contact us to reserve your place now!
Firehouse Subs has made a generous donation that will fund a new poetry group: incarcerated females. Steffani Fletcher and Stephanie Durham will be going into the Pretrial Detention Facility downtown to work with the incarcerated female teens who are charged as adults. They have already toured the facility and have met the girls, who are very eager to begin classes!
Thank you to Firehouse Subs and all of our partners as we continue to encourage and rehabilitate our community through the power of the written word! Three poetry therapy sessions are underway at Gateway Community Services in their Adolescent Recovery Residential Treatment facility. Since its inception in 1978, Gateway Community Services has helped thousands of people overcome drug and alcohol addiction. The Hope at Hand team is working with approximately 30 students, ages 13-17, residing at the facility. The classes have been received with tremendous success and we look forward to a long and productive partnership.
